Almost everywhere I go I hear the same sentiment about Bay City: “There’s nothing to do in Bay City”. That’s a bit of an exaggeration. It’s kind of like saying “I’m starving” when you’ve just skipped one meal. You’re not, you’re just hungry.
Do you know that there are actually many things to do in and around Bay City? Do you know how many parks there are within the city limits of Bay City? The answer will surprise you! Call us the parks and recreation department and see. I know I was surprised. Besides parks, we have a wonderful Birding and Nature Center, and outside the city limits there are various rivers and bays and even a wonderful beach here in Matagorda county. You are limited only by your imagination for things to do here in Matagorda county.
Aside from the daily offerings of activities in the area, we have two wonderful carnivals each year. Saturday, August 13, will be the first annual Family Fun Day at the fairgrounds. 4-6 pm is focused on elementary ages and 7-10 pm is focused on the teens. This weekend and the next there will be a wonderful production of “The Pink Panther Strikes Again” at the civic center. These are just a sampling of the many activities awaiting your enjoyment each year in Matagorda county.
One more activity that happens each year and is focused on the teens in the area is the Bay City 5th Quarters. After the home football games for the Bay City Blackcats, the teens flock over to the Nichols St. Church of Christ for food, fun, and fellowship. Last year we had over 400 teens for each of the first two 5th Quarters and about 250 teens for each of the last three.
At each 5th Quarter there is free food, free inflatables, free volleyball and football, free video games to play as well as various other ways to just “hang out” in a safe and friendly environment. The event begins after the game and ends at midnight. Last year we even had some giveaways and 5 people won iPods there!
This year the Nichols St. Church of Christ is planning on hosting these 5th Quarters once again. You can help! We are looking for businesses and individuals to help sponsor the cost of these events. We need money for the inflatables, food, giveaways as well as for replacing some of the games and supplies that were used up last year.
This event is hosted by the church, but it is a community activity. Several businesses and individuals sponsored us last year by donating money or even items that were given away during these events. It would truly be a blessing if you would partner with us in this as well!
Aside from financial partnerships, we are also interested in your prayers. There is also a need for volunteers, so feel free to contact me if you can help. We will be having 5 5th quarters: September 16 and 23, October 7 and 21, and November 4.
I look forward to partnering with you to provide this wonderful opportunity for teens of Matagorda county to have something fun and safe to do this fall. God bless you, and if you have any questions or comments about how you can help, contact me at jddobbs@Verizon.net or via my cell at 559-553-5055 or at the office at 245-1611.
God bless you, now go have some fun!
